Single MPPT (2 PV Terminals) vs Dual Independent MPPT – How Much Generation Gap

Many beginners are confused by the number of PV terminals on inverters.
Some models have 2 PV terminals but only a single MPPT channel. Others also have 2 PV terminals, yet they are dual independent MPPT. Even with the same number of terminals, power output can differ significantly. Let’s talk about the real-world performance difference.

Single MPPT (with 2 PV terminals)
It uses one set of sampling and tracking circuits. The two terminals are internally parallel-connected.
Purpose: Simply for connecting two PV strings. The voltage of both PV strings must be roughly the same.
Drawback: If one string suffers shading, different orientation, mismatched panel models or age gaps, it will drag down the overall voltage. The MPPT can only track one unified maximum power point, so power generation is limited by the weaker string.
Best for: Two PV strings with identical orientation, no shading and same panel specifications.

Dual Independent MPPT (2 channels with separate PV terminals)
Each channel has independent voltage & current sampling and separate maximum power tracking, working without mutual interference.
Advantage: The two PV strings can face different directions or have partial shading. Each channel tracks its own maximum power point independently and will not pull down the other.
Example: One string facing south and the other facing west; or one string shaded by trees while the other is under full sunlight. Both operate at their optimal working points to retain more power output.
How big is the actual generation gap?

• When both PV strings are identical, no shading and same orientation: There is barely any difference in power yield. Single MPPT is more cost-effective for this scenario.
• With shading, mismatched orientation or mixed old/new panels: The gap becomes obvious. Dual MPPT delivers higher energy production. Under severe shading conditions, the difference can reach 10%~25%.

  Many customers mistakenly believe "more terminals = more MPPT channels", which leads to wrong product selection. Before ordering, check the datasheet to confirm the number of independent MPPT channels, not just the quantity of PV ports.
