In the previous section, we introduced grid-tied, off-grid, and hybrid systems. In this section, we’ll look at how to choose the right system.
When selecting a system, there’s no need to agonize over “which one is better.” By focusing on three key factors—grid conditions, electricity needs, and budget versus returns—you can make a decision in just three steps.
Step 1: Assess Grid Conditions
Grid conditions determine the feasibility of the system.
• Stable grid with no frequent power outages or rationing: Prioritize a grid-tied system, as it offers the best value for money and stable returns.
• No grid coverage: An off-grid system is the only option.
• Unstable grid with frequent power outages or rationing, or high electricity rates with a large peak-to-off-peak price differential: Prioritize a hybrid system to balance stability and cost-effectiveness.
Step 2: Determine Electricity Needs
Based on your usage scenarios, assess your requirements for power supply stability.
• If the goal is solely to save on electricity bills and generate revenue from feeding power into the grid, with no need for backup power: Choose a grid-connected system.
• If there is a need for backup power for critical loads and power outages are unacceptable: Choose a hybrid system.
• If temporary power supply is required and there is no grid access: Choose an off-grid system.
Step 3: Calculate Budget and Returns
Balance short-term investment with long-term returns based on your budget.
• If your budget is limited, you seek a quick return on investment, and grid conditions are favorable: Choose a grid-connected system.
• If you have a sufficient budget and prioritize long-term, stable power supply: Choose an off-grid system if there is no grid coverage; choose a hybrid system if grid coverage is available.
• For commercial and industrial users with a large peak-to-off-peak price differential and stable electricity load: Prioritize a hybrid system; peak-off-peak arbitrage can significantly increase returns and shorten the payback period.
Summary
Among the three major system types—grid-connected, off-grid, and hybrid—there is no absolute superiority or inferiority; the key lies in matching the system to your specific scenario and needs.
• Grid-connected systems: Low cost and stable returns; suitable for users with a stable grid who prioritize cost-effectiveness.
• Off-grid systems: The only solution in areas without grid coverage; suitable for remote regions or special emergency power supply needs.
• Hybrid systems: Balance stability and returns, suitable for users in areas with unstable grids or those requiring backup power.
As photovoltaic technology continues to advance, hybrid systems—thanks to their flexibility and versatility—are becoming the mainstream development direction in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. It is recommended to assess local sunlight conditions, electricity pricing policies, and load requirements in advance, and consult professionals when necessary, to ensure the system truly achieves efficient power generation, stable electricity supply, and substantial returns.
